Press Release Regarding The Informal High-level Meeting On “the Role Of Member States In Mediation” To Be Held In The Un General Assembly , 22 May 2012 , 24.05.2012

A high-level thematic meeting on mediation will be held by H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, President of the UN General Assembly, on 23 May in the General Assembly.
The meeting which will be held under the theme of "Role of Member States in Mediation" will be attended by Ministers and Deputy Ministers from ten countries and Turkey will be represented by H.E. Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In this context, H.E. Mr. Davutoğlu will address the UN General Assembly in the morning and in the afternoon will participate in the interactive panel entitled “The challenge of coherence, coordination and complementarity among various actors in mediation processes”, together with his counterparts from Finland, Brazil and Qatar.
Turkey launched the “Mediation for Peace” initiative in 2010 together with Finland and pioneered the preparation of the resolution on mediation adopted in June 2011 by the UN General Assembly by assuming the co-chairmanship of the Group of Friends of Mediation established within this scope.
Following the adoption of the above-mentioned resolution, the President of the UN General Assembly has designated “mediation” as one of the top priorities of the ongoing 66th Session of the UN General Assembly and the meeting of 23 May 2012 will also be held in this context.
H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, will also attend the meeting as a speaker, and H.E. Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu will have a bilateral meeting with him on this occasion.
